THE WORRIED US Smart phones company Palm has come up for sale as it competes with the popularity of Apple's iPhone and the Blackberry. Palm has one of the best mobile operating systems with multi-tasking, great application switcher, hi-tech games, and a very stable operating system.

The company’s new hope, the Palm Pre, after the heavy publicity last year and its new operating system, web’s, received favorable reviews. Besides Apple and Goggle, Palm is the only company to have tried a modern smart phone operating system. The company has a market capitalization of $1 billion. The company is looking for bids in the next few days. Shares in Palm, which makes the Pre and Pixy phones and has developed the innovative web’s phone software, increased by nearly seventeen per cent yesterday as reported.

Palm's Web’s operating system is considered the company's most valuable asset. Rumored buyers include hardware firms such as Taiwan's HTC and the China's Renovo. Interests could also come from Nokia or RIM, who could view Palm's easy-to-use software as an attractive deal in comparison to the iPhone and Android.

Nokia to ‘vigorously’ defend against investor lawsuit

Finnish mobile manufacturer Nokia has said it intends to “vigorously” defend itself against a class-action lawsuit filed against it in the state of New York by US investors.
The suit was filed by City of Roseville Employees’ Retirement System who allege the Finnish company did not disclose certain facts about its financial situation, which caused them to lose money between 24 January and 5 September of 2008.
The investors had invested in Nokia through American Depositary Shares (ADS). ADS shares are issued by US banks and are intended to smooth the process for US investors who wish to buy stakes in foreign companies.
Specifically, the suit alleges that Nokia did not disclose to investors that it was expecting a production delay in its mid-price mobile phones, including certain smart phones, in 2008.
It also claims that Nokia did not disclose that it had slashed its average selling prices in order to retain market share.
However, in a brief statement issued today, Nokia said it had reviewed the allegations contained in the complaint and that it believes they are without merit.
“Nokia intends to defend itself against the complaint vigorously,” the company said.
Nokia Finnish job cuts

Separately, Nokia announced today it intends to cut 285 jobs at its Salo plant in Finland as part of its plans to refocus the facility on the production of devices for the high-value smart-phone market.
Nokia's Salo facility employs about 2,200 people.

Nokia to lay off up to 330 R&D staffers

Nokia said Friday that a streamlining effort could result in the elimination of as many as 330 positions from its research and development staff, or about 2 percent of its global R&D workforce.

The changes will likely hit up to 230 workers in the company's Oulu site in Finland and roughly 100 at its Copenhagen site. Nokia said it plans to offer voluntary severance packages to the affected workers and to find alternative jobs for as many people as possible.
The company currently employs more than 17,000 workers in its R&D business. It has 2,000 employees at the Oulu facility and 1,000 in Copenhagen.
Though Nokia still holds the top spot in the smartphone arena, its dominance has been eroded by competition from the likes of Apple and Research In Motion. A recent In-Stat report found that Nokia's share of the smartphone market had dropped to 35 percent in this year's second quarter compared with 50 percent in the prior year's quarter.
Another report from Strategy Analytics revealed that Apple had surpassed Nokia in cell phone profits during the third quarter, the first time that Nokia had fallen to second place.
Nokia's third-quarter results showed a net loss of $832 million, while sales dropped around 20 percent. Nokia Siemens, the network equipment maker run by Nokia and Siemens, has also been a drag on its owners, recently announcing its own layoffs and cost cuts as a result of its weak performance.Read More....

New mobile music services are booming

The Apple iPhone, combined with the iTunes store, proved that mobile music is quite an interesting market.
Other mobile device manufacturers are jumping the bandwagon and rolling out new music services.

First there was Nokia’s “Comes With Music” (CWM) service, launched in October 2008, giving users unlimited access to 4 million tracks. Sony Ericsson followed with improvements on their PlayNow platform. Also Blackberry came with mobile music applications.

Eric Nicoli, CEO of the EMI Group, proved the potential of the market, speaking at the annual MIDEM event: “You only have to look at Japan, where 90 percent of all digital music sold is downloaded on to phones to see what a mobile download market can be.”
In other markets however, it hasn’t come quite that far just yet. For a long time, the high price tag of music-enabled phones was an obstacle. But manufacturers want to change that with their new product range. Several operators are targeting the younger generation with mobile phone subscriptions that include access to the mobile music service.
